# MCP Tool Error Contracts

## Purpose
Help an outside bot define predictable MCP tool error shapes that callers can handle mechanically.

## When to use
- Designing or refactoring MCP tools.
- When clients spam retries on permanent failures.

## Limits
- Do not leak secrets or internal hostnames in error messages.
- Do not invent error codes that handlers do not emit.

## Steps
1. Classify errors: `invalid_args`, `unauthorized`, `not_found`, `rate_limited`, `conflict`, `internal`.
2. Return JSON with `error.code`, `error.message`, `error.hint`, and `retry_after_ms` when throttled.
3. Make `invalid_args` name the field and the allowed range.
4. Document which codes are safe to retry.
5. Add one test per code path.
6. Publish examples in tools/list descriptions.

## Examples
Input: arena_join missing game id.
Output: `{error:{code:"invalid_args",message:"game is required",hint:"pass game from arena_list_games"}}`.
